Books I Wouldn't Mind Santa Bringing Me This Year.

It's unbelievable how quickly Christmas is approaching! And, for that matter, 2018! Despite the fact that I get through so many reads a year, I still end up wanting more books for Christmas, usually those on the backlist that I didn't quite ('quite' being a loose term dating back to when I started this blog in a lot of cases) get to. Hopefully Santa will hear my plea for these!
1) 'The Worm & The Bird' by Coralie Bickford-Smith.
Oh, I sense a collection starting here! I have 'The Fox & The Star' by this ultra-talented artist, which I actually received for Christmas a couple of years ago! She's now releasing another one and I'm very excited because these little fairy tales are so pretty!
2) 'The One Hundred Nights Of Hero' by Isabel Greenberg.
While we're on the topic of illustrated books, here's a graphic novel I've had my eye on for some time. It received a gushing review from Lucy Powrie, one of my favourite Twitter people, and ever since I've been making grabby hands ever time I've seen it in a shop. I almost bought it the other day but stopped myself upon realising that it's on the Christmas wish list! Here's hoping!
3) 'A Crown Of Wishes' by Roshani Chokshi.
So this is actually a book that was released this year! I've been hankering for it ever since finishing 'The Star-Touched Queen' because this world is everything I'd ever hoped for in a YA fairy tale set around Hindu folklore and mythology. The writing is stunning too, and I really want to read this companion novel!
4) 'Stars Above' by Marissa Meyer.
I finished 'Winter', the last book of The Lunar Chronicles, quite a while back! I loved it, naturally. This collection of short stories feels like a good progression because it has a further ending, some origin stories, and some general, added world-building onto the main series! I'm also hoping for 'Fairest', another short story that reveals a little more about the motive of the villain of the series!
5) 'Retribution Rails' by Erin Bowman.
If ever there was a book that attracted me to a whole new sub-genre it would be 'Vengeance Road', the first book in this series. I never in a million years would have thought that YA 'wild-west' would be my thing until I read that. As soon as I heard this book was coming out, I didn't even read the blurb. It went straight onto my TBR.
6) 'The Dark Days Pact' by Alison Goodman.
I received and read this ARC so long ago now, but I still remember the feels. For those that are fans of 'Pride & Prejudice' by Jane Austen, but would perhaps like a supernatural twist, this is definitely a series to consider. I consider Mr Darcy and Elizabeth Bennett to be my guilty pleasure and original OTP, and these two gave me the same feels.
7) 'Warrior Witch' by Danielle L. Jensen.
I read 'Stolen Songbird' an absolute age ago, and 'Hidden Huntress' more recently. Now, I'm hoping to finish this cracking series off without leaving too long between books. What makes this one special is the inclusion of trolls, which I don't ever remember seeing in Fantasy YA before, and I love the way they are depicted too. Books about sinister fae are often the best, and book two dropped one heck of a cliffhanger so I'm excited about that too!
8) 'The Seafarer's Kiss' by Julia Ember.
So this book has a number of things that make it top priority on the list. (1) Mermaids. I don't read enough books about these creatures. (2) Loki. I have a bit of a fascination with this particular mythological deity and will greedily devour any kind of media representation of him. (3) LGBT love! I want to read more LGBT+ fantasy and here is the perfect opportunity to do so!
9) 'Norse Mythology' by Neil Gaiman.
Ahh Neil Gaiman. I love his imagination and his passion, and though sometimes I find his books a little hard to get into, the darkness of them thrills me. I can always guarantee he'll write a story I've never read before. So his retelling of Norse Mythology? This should be interesting.
10) 'Bad Feminist' by Roxane Gay.
I wanted to include at least one non-fiction book on here because I'm trying to read more of it! Especially on my favourite topic: feminism. I've read a couple of books on the topic so far, some I've loved and some have been less impressive. But I'm excited to try more!
I could probably think of so many more than ten for this category, but it will be pretty easy for me to do this one because I actually have a book Christmas list that I sent my family. Fingers crossed!
1) 'A Court Of Thorns & Roses'; Sarah J. Maas.
I've been wanting this book ever since I heard about it coming out. It sounds so up my streak. A fairy filled version of Beauty & The Beast? Perfect! I love Fairy Tale retellings! I've read 'Valiant' by Holly Black and it's along a similar theme: I really enjoyed it. I have high hopes for this book!
2) 'The Rest Of Us Just Live Here'; Patrick Ness.
I've heard so many good things about this book! I've only read one of Ness' books in the past, and that was also a gift because I begged for it. This one has a Zombie Apocalypse theme and I really do like a splash of horror, so it looks like my kind of book! I can't wait to get hold of this book at some point, hopefully on Christmas day!
3) 'The Scorpio Races'; Maggie Stiefvater.
This author constantly evades me and I have no idea why. She has so many great looking books out and I even have one sitting on my bookshelf. Why haven't I read it yet? No idea. My thinking is that if I start with a stand alone I might be able to bring myself to start one of her series.
4) 'The Buried Giant'; Kazuo Ishoguro.
This book looks absolutely great. It contains fantastical elements but asks deep questions and I like that in a book. I'e heard it sparked a little bit of controversy, something to do with misquotes, but it hasn't put me off in the slightest. I want this book!
5) 'The Singer's Gun'; Emily St. John Mandel.
I think this pretty much goes without saying, because everyone knows I'm dying to read another book by this author. Though all of Mandel's books have received high ratings, this one is the next highest rated on Goodreads so I'm looking forward to giving it a go. To be honest, I would love to read any books by Mandel.
6) 'Golden Son'; Pierce Brown.
Oh my goodness I feel so bad about not having read this book. The third will be out soon! I really enjoyed 'Red Rising', so I really want to get hold of 'Golden Son' and find out what happens next. I have high hopes for this phenomenal sci-fi, particularly as I don't read an awful lot of that genre.
7) 'Hidden Huntress'; Danielle L. Jensen.
If I'm behind on the choice above, I'm definitely behind here. Some of you may remember me adoring 'Stolen Songbird' but for some reason I never read the next installment of the series, which I sorely regret. I need to read it, because I want so badly to become reinvested in the characters and story.
8) 'Cruel Beauty'; Rosamund Hodge.
Ugh, so many books that I haven't read yet. I love Fairy Tale retellings and hope to read so many more of them this year coming. This is pretty much a must, especially as it mixes with Greek Mythology. It's highly reviewed too, so I know I won't be wasting my time getting into this author's stories.
9) 'The Wrath & The Dawn'; Renee Ahdieh.
After reading 'A Thousand Nights' and the reviews telling me that these two stories are based on the same story but are so different I knew I had to read it. It's a well loved 2015 release and received some pretty great reviews. I'm excited about revisiting that same tale but seeing it in a different way.
10) 'Illuminae'; Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff.
Another 2015 release that I missed this year (there have been a lot) but I'm excited nevertheless. A lot of people loved it and recommended it to me so I know I should really have already read it. If this turned up under the tree I would be over the moon!
I'm extremely happy that this topic came up because there are so many books that I hope I receive from Santa this Christmas!
1) Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children; Ransom Riggs.
This looks like such a creepy book and I really want to get my hand on this one to see what all the fuss is about! I've read many good reviews on this one and the plot line just looks so intriguing. I heard about this series so many months ago and I would really like to finally get into it!
2) All The Birds, Singing; Evie Wylde.
I first heard about this book a while back, when I did a Six Degrees Of Separation post and it was the chosen book for that month. I really liked the cover and I was curious to read the synopsis. It looks like a really good book that I would enjoy very much. Hopefully Santa is feeling generous this year!
3) The Enchanted; Rene Denfeld.
Seriously, just read the plot-line for this. It's a book told from the POV of a Death-Row inmate. As well as that, it contains a whole lot of magic, imagination and mystery. I have had my eye on this book for such a long time and I've heard so many good things about it!
4) The Slow Regard Of Silent Things; Patrick Rothfuss.
Ahh Patrick Rothfuss. His book 'The Name Of The wind' is frankly one of the best Fantasy books I have ever read and I need to have this book in my life. My love for this Author can't even be put into words, I was totally hooked and I have never got through such an epic book in such a short space of time. For anyone who hasn't read it, I would highly recommend this one, especially if Fantasy is your thing!
5) The Night Circus; Erin Morgenstern.
First can I just say that I love the covers for this book. They are absolutely stunning! Secondly, the book itself looks so good! It has many positive reviews on Goodreads and fellow Bloggers have raved about it non-stop. The plot-line looks pretty original and I really hope I get this one.
6) Cress; Marissa Meyer.
As if this book wasn't going to be on this list! I read 'Scarlet' very recently and absolutely adored it, just as I had loved 'Cinder' before it! I am so eager to find out what happens in this series and I need to get hold of this book ASAP so that I can! Then all I'll have to do is join everyone else in the big long wait for the next book, 'Winter'.
7) The Scorpio Races; Maggie Stiefvater.
I have heard a lot about Maggie Stiefvater as an Author and I want to read all of her books actually. However for some reason, this one really caught my attention. Perhaps it's because it's a standalone. Maybe it's the good reviews. It could even be because it has a pretty cool title. I have no idea! I just know that I really want to read it.
8) More Than This; Patrick Ness.
Of this entire list, Patrick Ness is the Author I most want to try and read. All of his books look so interesting and have very different plot-lines. He seems to be one of those Authors that people find really hard to place into a category, but everyone enjoys. The reason why I've chosen this one in particular because the cover is the coolest I've seen in a while! I'd be happy with any of his works though, to be honest.
9) The Year Of The Ladybird; Graham Joyce.
So there's a bit of a strange story behind this one, because before I saw this book I really wanted to read 'Some Kind Of Fairytale' by the same Author. Of course I still do, but when I saw this book and I saw that it was a Ghost Story, I found that this one (also known as 'The Ghost In The Electric Blue Suit') intrigued me even more. A lot of Graham Joyce's works look good, but I would really like this one!
10) Strands Of Bronze & Gold; Jane Nickerson.
We all know I'm a big fan of Fairytale re-tellings but this one's a little different. It re-tells the famous story of Bluebeard! The funny thing is, it's one of those tales that many people have heard of but not so many people have ever tried to put a twist on. I would love to read it and find out what Nickerson has chosen to do with it!
