Daily Shenanigans, 05/03/2014: Story Writing.

Well today has felt pretty long and busy, despite the fact that really, it hasn't been. I got into Uni for my lecture at 10 o'clock, and found out that all Tech Slots have been cancelled meaning that programming will have to be done during Tech Week. This is very annoying, but nothing can be done so I guess I'll just have to cope with it. I don't think my mood has been helped by the fact that yesterday's headache never really went away. Also, we discussed our portfolios and I feel a lot better now that I understand what they involve. I was really stressed about this one because I didn't understand what I was supposed to do, but I'm feeling a lot better about it now!

The weather was absolutely beautiful today, and I'm really glad I chose to take the train. I got a lot of reading done in the process. Walking back to the station to go home, I walked through town and couldn't get over the lovely weather that has suddenly hit. It was a little nippy, but the sun was out and I had forgotten what that even looked like! I walked into a couple of charity shops and Waterstones, and I'm very proud of myself because I didn't buy anything! Go me! I wanted to though, the temptation was very great. I did buy another pancake though, the kind that you find in the UK (so Crêpes). Mine was smothered in Nutella, and needless to say, was delicious. I have been eyeing up that food stall for weeks and I finally took the opportunity today.

When I got home, I chose to spend the rest of the afternoon and evening writing. I have now completed the first draft for a Prologue/First Chapter of that idea that's been running through my head over and over. It isn't perfect but I feel like I have written what I need to, now I just need to tidy it up. I'm very excited so far about it, and I'm considering, when it has been developed a bit, putting an excerpt on here for you guys to read. I would certainly appreciate the feedback! I don't have a title for it yet, it's in really early stages of development and I really need to flesh out the concept and plot-line I'm going for here. But nonetheless, I'm pleased so far.

Not an awful lot else happened, I'm going to bed a bit earlier tonight (not much) so I can do a bit of reading and then catch up on some sleep. I need to do some Portfolio work tomorrow for Multimedia, but hopefully I can also finish and write a review for 'Wolves'. The pace of the story is really picking up now and I finally seem to be catching up with it a bit. I look forward to sharing my thoughts on the finished thing.

Daily Shenanigans, 11/02/2014: Planned reads update!

It is my first 'day off' of the week, though I wouldn't really call it that because I got so many things done! Firstly, earlier today I posted my first 'Top Ten Tuesday' and this week's topic was 'Books That Will Make You Swoon'. I found this incredibly hard. Mostly because I was thinking of books as I went, as I'd only managed to think of three or four beforehand. But as well as that, this topic was definitely one I dreaded as not very many books do make me swoon. I achieved seven, not a bad score, and the term swoon definitely took on a number of definitions for the post. It was still fun to write though and I'm happy with how it turned out.

This morning, I went to get some fuel for the car and do a bit of shopping. I mostly bought a few bits and bobs for Valentines Day (I am on it this year, I normally do everything last minute) and I am so excited to give Mat his presents! I can't believe its only three days away! As well as that, I also bought myself a magazine called 'Writing Magazine'. As I want to become a writer I feel that practicing is important whenever I have the time. I haven't read it properly yet, but a quick flick through revealed some very interesting looking competitions which I thought it would be fun to enter. I like a challenge.

Most of the afternoon (after finishing my post) was filled with sorting out my blog, my Goodreads account and just generally keeping busy. After taking a look at my promised up and coming reads, compared with the challenges I have set myself for over the course of the year, I realised that I am going to have to push back reading 'A Wise Man's Fear' and 'Inheritance'. Those two books are just so big and I still need to read a Contemporary book for 'Jumble Your Genres' and a book with one of the chosen words for the 'Key Words' challenge by the end of February. But, I have a plan! Firstly, I am (as well as reading 'Pure') in the process of getting through Italo Calvino's classic 'If On A Winter's Night A Traveller'. I started reading this while staying with Mat a few weeks a go, and it was really only serving the purpose of being something to read on the tube. Mat has kindly agreed to bring it down at the weekend so that I may finish it and use it in my challenges. You can look forward to a review of that fairly soon! My chosen Contemporary book will be Stephen Chbosky's 'The Perks Of Being A Wallflower'. I have seen the movie (it's fantastic!) and I am so desperate to get cracking on this book! Also, if I can, I will try to get Jackie Kay's 'Red Dust Road' in there as an extra 'Key Words' entry (sneaky!)

So there you have it, my next couple of planned reads!

I also had time to go to Staples with Bev (my sister) this evening after dinner and I bought some new pens and a couple of notepads. I want to get more organised with blogging and exactly what I will be posting about (not another repeat of desperately trying and failing to come up with a list of books on the spot). So now I have a notepad just for this purpose, so that any ideas I do have can be recorded on the go! Handy! I sadly didn't get as much Uni work done today as I had hoped, but then, I did achieve a lot Monday. Tomorrow looks to be a busy one, what with a lecture, previews to attend for the shows on the night I am company managing and another show which I'm both helping to set up for and watching in the evening. I'll be back late and won't have time for much blogging except my daily post. So far, I have not missed a single one! Go me!

A motivational speech to myself.

Well Readers, the time has come to make a change to my life.

After far too much procrastination, forgetting about and downright laziness I have decided to make a decision about this blog. Either get rid of it or commit. And I mean commit. After much thought, I have realised that the problem lies with my inability to find a reason to write this blog, and bad time management. I am quite busy with my Final Year at University, and when I'm not, I never feel that I have anything truly worth saying. The lack of definite purpose makes it very difficult for me to dedicate time to it.

This decision making process has come at a very important time on my life. After three years studying Performing Arts, I have realised now that what I enjoy most in life is writing, in particular plays and fiction. This is what I have decided to do with my life and in order for it to work, I need to once again show commitment. Sorting through my room recently, I have rediscovered piles upon piles of dusty, unfinished books that I started and never completed (a theme that seems quite prevalent within this post) and, after much persuasion from my sister (who is far more organised than I, her blog can be found here: http://tutusandballetshoes.blogspot.co.uk/ , I would recommend a read! She actually regularly updates!) I am attempting to sort my life out and read through them all.

Reading and writing have always been a passion of mine, and something that I would like to consider myself fairly good at. I have spent too long worrying about being good at things I no longer truly enjoy, and not long enough engaging in and practicing the things that I do. On a recent shopping trip with my previously mentioned sister, we visited several Charity Shops and ended up coming away with a good six or seven books each that were real finds. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed doing that. Perusing the titles, examining their front covers, reading those first few lines and finally deciding that this book intrigues me enough to hand over the cash and take it home. I want, one day, to have written one of those books that someone finds accidentally on the shelf while searching for something else. Wouldn't it be lovely to be able to give someone else that feeling? To have someone want to read the words that I have painstakingly written?

Perhaps this is more a motivational speech to myself than a blog post as such. The point is, for my Final Year I am preparing a final piece that I must research and script for, tasks which I have thoroughly enjoyed and dedicated much time to. If I can put so much work into that, then I should be able to do the same with this blog by using it to review and comment on my favourite books or latest reads, as well as give updates on my own life and progress on my career dream to have my own book published.

That is my plan. And I will stick to it.
